10 Unforgettable Day Trips from Belfast

If you're visiting Northern Ireland and basing yourself in Belfast, you're in for something special. Within just an hour or two, you can find yourself standing in front of ancient castles, walking along windswept beaches, or exploring landscapes that feel straight out of a movie.

As a professional photographer based here, I’ve spent years exploring these locations with couples, families, and solo travellers—capturing moments in some of the most beautiful settings Ireland has to offer. If you're planning your trip, here are 10 incredible day trips from Belfast that combine breathtaking scenery with unforgettable experiences (and perfect photo opportunities).

1. Castle Ward & Strangford Lough

This is one of my absolute favourite day trips—and for good reason.

Start your journey at Castle Ward, an 18th-century estate famous for its unique architecture and as a filming location for Game of Thrones. From there, take a scenic drive along Strangford Lough and stop at St Patrick’s Monument in Saul, believed to mark the site of Ireland’s first Christian church.

With peaceful waters, historic surroundings, and beautiful open landscapes, this area offers a relaxed and scenic introduction to Northern Ireland.

2. The Giant’s Causeway Coastal Route (Including the Dark Hedges)

Arguably one of the most famous drives in the world, this route is packed with jaw-dropping stops.

Highlights include Carrickfergus Castle, the Gobbins Cliff Path, the Dark Hedges, the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, and the iconic Giant’s Causeway itself. Every turn offers a new photo opportunity, from rugged cliffs to atmospheric tree-lined roads and crashing Atlantic waves.

Perfect for: First-time visitors and dramatic landscapes.

3. The Mourne Mountains & Murlough Bay

If you love the outdoors, this is a must.

The Mournes are a hiker’s paradise, with trails ranging from gentle walks to more challenging climbs like Slieve Donard. Along the way, make time for Murlough Bay, one of the most breathtaking coastal spots in Northern Ireland—where dramatic cliffs meet sweeping sea views.

Whether you're hiking, driving, or simply taking it all in, this area offers some of the most epic scenery on the island.

Perfect for: Adventure seekers and unforgettable scenic portraits.

4. Glenariff Forest Park

Known as the “Queen of the Glens,” Glenariff is home to waterfalls, lush forests, and peaceful walking trails.

The waterfall walk is especially photogenic and accessible for most visitors.

Perfect for: Families and nature lovers.

5. Kilbroney Park & Rostrevor

At the foot of the Mourne Mountains, Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor is one of Northern Ireland’s hidden gems.

With forest trails, panoramic views over Carlingford Lough, and the famous Cloughmore Stone (a giant boulder steeped in local legend), this is a magical spot for both exploring and photography.

Perfect for: Families, couples, and scenic viewpoints.

6. Carlingford Village & Lough

Just across the border in County Louth, Carlingford is a postcard-perfect medieval village full of charm.

Wander narrow streets, explore Carlingford Castle, and enjoy incredible views across the lough (one of Ireland’s 3 fjords). It’s also a fantastic place for food lovers, with cosy pubs and world famous local seafood.

Make sure your hire car doesn’t have any restrictions regarding crossing the border for this one.

7. Tollymore Forest Park

At the base of the Mourne Mountains, Tollymore Forest Park is my favourite place in the North of Ireland.

With its stone bridges, winding rivers, and ancient woodland, it’s one of the most atmospheric locations in Northern Ireland—and another Game of Thrones filming spot. Whether you're wandering the trails or simply soaking in the scenery, it’s an incredible place to slow down and connect with nature.

Bonus Points for visiting in Autumn for stunning foliage.

8. Hillsborough Village & Forest Park

Just 20 minutes from Belfast, Hillsborough is a charming Georgian village with boutique shops, cosy cafés, and a beautiful forest park.

It’s also home to Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, the best place to be on a sunny day in Ireland.

9. Armagh City – The Orchard County

Known for its apple orchards and twin cathedrals, Armagh is rich in history and charm.

Visit local cider producers or simply wander the historic streets.

Perfect for: Culture lovers and unique local experiences.

10. Rathlin Island

For something truly special, take a ferry from Ballycastle to Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland’s only inhabited offshore island.

Here you’ll find rugged cliffs, dramatic sea views, and an incredible sense of peace and isolation. In spring and summer, it’s also one of the best places to see puffins and seabird colonies up close.

It’s a slower pace of travel—but one that rewards you with unforgettable scenery and a completely different perspective on Northern Ireland.

Perfect for: Nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and adventurous travellers.

Capture Your Northern Ireland Experience

Northern Ireland isn’t just a place you visit—it’s somewhere you feel. From rugged coastlines to peaceful forests, every corner tells a story.

If you’re travelling to Northern Ireland and want to capture your trip in a meaningful way—whether it’s a couples session, family portraits, or a solo adventure shoot—I’d love to help you create something truly special during your visit.

Because the best souvenirs aren’t things—they’re memories you can relive forever.
